We had quite a scare last night. I was watching the final episode of ER and about 9:45pm the smoke detector goes off. At first I thought the beeping was from the TV show. Someone is always close to death on there and the machines are always beeping. However, I opened the door that leads to the bedrooms (where the smoke detector is) and could smell smoke from Andrew's room. I rushed in and realized that his lamp had fallen over onto his panda bear. He got this bear when he was 6 weeks old for his first Christmas. Andrew enjoys looking at the picture of the panda holding Andrew that Christmas.
The Panda was burning inches from Andrew. I grabbed the bear and took it out of the house and unplugged the lamp. Below are pictures of the lamp (you can see the black panda fur on the bulb and the panda's badly burned arm. I got Andrew settled back down to sleep and went into the living room and fell apart It really scared me how close Andrew was to getting hurt. I find I tend to act in emergencies but tend to fall apart after everything is deemed safe again.
So now I'm rethinking lighting in Andrew's room. He LOVES to read before bed but obviously the clip on lamp is not safe. He also likes a nightlight. I'm thinking I will get a tall lamp (Like for a living room) and put low wattage bulbs in to offer light but get a booklight for him to read.
Sometimes Andrew likes to sleep in the upper bunk of his loft bed and sometimes he likes to sleep in his trundle so I need something that can be moved from bed to bed. I thought about Christmas lights but I think they can be a fire hazard as well.
I'm open to suggestions though!!!

How scary. I would go with a book light that he can clip to his books. You can get them at most book stores. I would also go with a floor lamp with a low watt bulb that is out of the way of getting knocked over. Glad everyone is okay.
O My goodness!!! Wow! I can only imagine how scared you must have felt. A fire is for some reason one of my biggest fear. Thank goodness for that FIRE alarm!!!
I agree that a floor lamp is the way to go. That's what we have for Austin and Alexis' rooms. The lamps we use have 3 bulbs on them, each bulb can be turned off so you can adjust the lighting to your needs. Alexis' room tends to be dark so she uses all 3 bulbs but Austin's room is brighter so he uses 2.
