I intended to write a post today. I've been gathering some pictures from Christmas and had some topics in mind to write about. Then today happened.
All through the night last night the girls were quite whiny. With all the weather changes, etc I figured they were getting a cold or something. I was able to soothe them with hugs, tucking them back in, even a cup of milk. They woke up earlier than usual and cried and cried. Leila was the worst which was unusual because Leah tends to be my drama queen.
My neice gave them a bath. I dressed Leila and we fed them breakfast. They were whiny. They didn't eat much. I decided that after an hour of constant whining, we would tell the speech therapist "not today."
I was helping Leila put on her hooded sweatshirt when I saw it. She had a rubberband that is normally the size of a dime around her wrist! Her hand was so swollen that you could barely see the rubberband. I quickly removed it while she screamed. Where did she get it?! I use them sometimes for pigtails but I worry about them swallowing them so I try to keep them away from them unless they are in their hair. Her hand was red and it was obvious it hurt.
I called the doctor and his nurse called me back and told me I had to take her in. I made arrangements for a neighbor to take Andrew and Leah and headed to the doctor's office. Within an hour the swelling had gone down drastically but it was still red and sore. The doctor looked at it did an exam and said there was no nerve damage.
What a relief. I cried a lot. I felt quite guilty that she managed to get a hold of this rubberband. It really could have done some major damage. I realized that at times I put more pressure on myself to be a good mother because I adopted them. I know it's stupid, but it's true. :)
When I put them to bed this evening, Leila's hand was only slightly swollen and she had a red mark all around her wrist from the rubberband. She doesn't seem to be too bothered by it but does NOT want anyone to touch it!
I did later find out how she got the rubberband in her crib. Normally I put their hair up in a single ponytail before bed to keep it out of their eyes. I use large ponytail holders (ones that can fit my wrist). My 14 year old neice was helping and used the small ponytail holder last night. I didn't think to double check because I didn't think that small holder could tie up all of their hair. My neice got very upset when she realized what had happened. I assured her that it was an honest mistake and that she's not a bad cousin just like I'm not a bad mother. :)
I'm glad this day is almost over. :)

Oh Man! I am so sorry! It stinks when things like this happen. Poor baby. But, it wasn't your fault. Like you said, honest mistake. No one thought this would happen. Lesson learned and life goes on til the next adventure! :)
Don't let the Mommy guilt get too bad. Thankfully nothing permanent happened and the girls have already forgotten it. It's always harder on the parent because you have all the worry. Eat some chocolate and try to rest. :)
